Choose Life -- Feeling like myself again

Have you ever felt like you were just existing and not living? For a long while, I was just existing.

Several years ago, I lost a friend in a car accident; she was only 21. She was on her way to a birthday celebration with some friends. A bad decision was made behind the wheel and she was gone forever.  When I first heard the news I was hurt, but for the most part I was "okay".  I used bible scriptures to console my hurting heart and to make sense of the news. In retrospect, I was reasoning myself out of the pain and realities of death and my eventual demise.  Her death affected me far deeper than I would have imaged. It forced me to face the reality that I can die at any given moment.

I began to question God. I asked Him, what's the point of working so hard if you're going die any way?  There were so many questions and no answers. I was up at all hours of the night just thinking. My days were long and I stopped enjoying life and what it had to offer...I was just...existing. I went to work, church, then home. Nightly, I micro-focused in on my purpose and my person. I had almost lost myself in this horrible cycle. Suddenly, nothing mattered and I was confused. I lacked focus and drive. I was uninspired.

In my stupor late one night, I started this blog. I thought, maybe if I express myself to an audience of some sort I would feel much better. Here I am years later; it was a great idea, I do feel better. And I'm feeling like myself again. Six years, 2 careers, 1 car, 1 apartment and 1 husband later, I am enjoying life again. I often stop to smell the roses. Every day I choose to be happy and I choose to do better than the previous day. Every day I choose LIFE.

Life is so short and so precious. You can lose everything in an instant. Choose LIFE everyday. Don't sweat the small stuff.

Inspirationally yours,

Ms. Jay

People with degrees think they know it all...

Hi folks!

Here's another one for you to think about.

So, I've entered my second year of teaching and what a roller coaster it's been! I've had some interesting experiences, but that's for a later post.

Let's talk, shall we?

I work around some incredibly intelligent people who have degrees. They discuss things like news, culture, race, politics, and other obscure information that the normal blue collar worker wouldn't care about. I mean, there's nothing wrong with that, but  they make fun of people who are ignorant to the subjects. I mean really? How can "what you know" make you feel more of a person than someone who doesn't know what you know?

So here's the kicker folks, they complain about how BROKE they are  and  how teachers are grossly overworked and  underpaid and do absolutely nothing about it. You might be wondering why this is the kicker. Let's think through this..here are my thoughts as I sit silently eating my lunch in the teacher's lounge,  "Well, if you're so "smart" and you're so "broke", then why not use your "smarts" to help you not to be broke. I mean you have time to discuss culture and make fun of people who are ignorant to what you think is common information.."

Clearly these people are comfortable competing in the rat race orr they're not *that* smart after all. :)
.
You know, I used to be like those people. I would stuff my head with all this knowledge and think I was better than everyone else who was ignorant. I too, would make fun of people who didn't know, what I thought was basic knowledge. I even went as far as to think that if I had a degree aka if I was really "smart" I would get a  good job and have a nice house with the white picket fence and a dog...you know, the  "American Dream". Then I looked at my bank statements and credit score and realized I am just as broke and destitute as the person I made fun of.

So, then, what does that tell you? These days appreciating the language from classic literature  like "The Aeneid" by Virgil and knowing the meaning of "coup d'etat" simply doesn't matter. Let's face it, we go to college so that we can have a better opportunity to make money. To make money though, requires much more than just knowing random pieces of information.  It requires some good ol' common sense, peoeple sense and some financial know how.

What's my point? People with degrees don't know everything and certainly they aren't rich. Don't ever let someone with a degree make you fell like less of a person. Let's be real here they probably owe enough money for their children's children to pay off and are probably unhappy. Clearly, people with degree don't know it all because if they did, they wouldn't be broke.

Thoughtfully Yours,
Ms. Jay

Let's Talk.... Marriage?

I know, you might be thinking, "Marriage? Who's getting married?!". Well, yours truly, Ms. Jay. I am please to announce that on March 23, 2014 I will be getting married to the love of my life, Mr. Clarke. These days my posts are quite sporadic and rather sparse, but I promise it's for good reason. I've been spending time  building, planning, and figuring  out some things in my life. As I compare my past to my present, I see that God has been doing wonders.  Within a short 2 1/2 years, not only am I getting married, but I am now a middle school math teacher, I have my own place, and a car. Now, this might sound small, but for me this is huge! What  a  mighty God I serve!

I'll leave you with this:
No matter how much life gets tough, just know that God is sovereign, and He knows what He's doing. You've gotta be able to trust him though. A few months ago, I went digging through past posts and found a one that I felt like re-reading. At the end of the post I wrote, "One day, I'm going to look back at this post and smile." You know what, I not only smiled but I cried tears of joy because I now have victory over that difficult place in my life. I noticed something though, all the while, I had hope. And that's what makes the difference. Keep your hope with you because in the end that's all that will carry you through.

Love always,
Ms. Jay

Passion, Dreams, and Reality

Now, I don't know about you but I honestly never wondered about the human voices behind the characters of the great American children's television series, Sesame Street. Like many children, I just watched the show and enjoyed the lights, music, colors, and raw entertainment.

For those of you who don't know I am an absolute, certified Netflix Junkie: cue awkward silent pause here... well maybe going a little bit overboard, lol, but you catch my drift. What I really love about Netflix is the fact that you can easily find almost anything you want from movie archives, and my most favorite: Documentaries.

So today, I was going on my usual Netflix rounds trying to find something to watch. "Being Elmo: A Puppeteer's Journey" was the first thing that caught my attention.

To my surprise it was quite inspiring to me. It certainly brought me behind the scenes of the hit television serious, Sesame Street and the beloved character, Elmo. It more so brought my attention to one man, Kevin Clash, the voice behind Elmo.
This documentary wonderfuly illustrates Clash's passion for puppets and how he turned his passion and dreams to a reality unlike anything he had ever imagined.

His story was so simple, yet captivating. He had been making puppets since the tender age of 10. He was made fun of not only in his school but from older siblings for his unusual obsession for puppetss, until one day he had one small break and landed a role in a local TV show in Boston where he grew up. One thing led to another. He eventually got to meet all the brain children behind his favorite childhood shows and characters such as Captain Kangaroo, the Muppets, and of course Sesame Street. It amazes me how he took this one obsession and almost seamlessly made it into a reality for himself.

Often times I wonder how people get globally recognized for their talents, deeds and contributions to society, leaving the small knit to hold the fabric of culture together. You know, you hear about stories like Kevin Clash, P. Diddy, Michael Jackson, Oprah, Mozart, Einstein, Steve Jobs, Bill Gates and the likes all the time. After taking a close look at contributors like these, I find that they all have one thing in common: passion for something they love. After finding out this pattern, I thought, "This is the key." If I could find one thing, that I am passionate about, really good at doing, and willing to work on it, I can make my little footprint on the sands of time.

Thank you Mr. Clash for showing me what it means to be passionate about something and working hard at it.

Until next time Beautiful People!

~Jay

My Take on the Travon Martin Case..

This one is going to be a tough one, so here’ s the disclaimer from now: you may not like what you are about to read. This is an “I’m just sayin’” Moment.
Number 1, if I hear one more thing about this case I am going to scream. Okay black people, we get the point. Now shut up.

In my opinion it was not a race issue, but rather a right or wrong issue. But then again, I wasn’t there to see what happened and neither do I know all the facts. And what a surprise neither do you. I gotta be frank here.

Here’s what is really irking my nerves: The fact that none of you people who are now ignorantly marching around with “I am Travon” signs, are normally un-opinionated, uninformed, and disinterested in the politics of this country. (Have you voted lately, oooo oooo yea?? ::Side eye:: ) You’ve decided to hop on the bandwagon and protest and be all loud mouthed about. Without a doubt racism STILL exists in the mighty U S of A, additionally sad cases of racism like this occur every day single day, unpublicized, unheard of, and un-noticed.

What’s my bottom line? Don’t decide to be some mighty activist now if you weren’t one before. What about all the other unarmed Travons out there? How ‘bout you go dig up those cases and speak for them too. And you want to know the saddest part of it all? One year from now, all you thousands of people won’t even give this case and its surrounding issues a thought. Sad, but true. You will go about your daily living selfishly thinking about the needs for yourselves. That’s how this country operates. The media pumps the public up with all this exaggerated information and has the NERVE to replay it over and over and over again…only to drop the issue full force as if it never existed. And we the public gobble it all up like fresh hot cakes strait out the iHop kitchen. (Shakes My Head) Then we completely forgot what we ate 5 seconds ago.

I am so sick and tired of the lackadaisical, follow-fashion ways of some African American people (and non-black) in this country. Silly. Honestly, I would respect you more if you were an Al Sharpton or Jess e Jackson before this case of Travon. Shame on you.

Now, was Zimmerman wrong, from the “facts” that have been fed to us, obviously , yes. Did the police officials properly handle the case according to procedure? Well that’s obvious too. Is it a black or white issue? Ask Zimmerman himself and police officials. To me it just seems like the police officials were just going through the “motions”. Unfortunately, the fact of the matter is that the African American male population has the highest rates of incarceration, unemployment (a contributor to increased crime rates), and death. If you were a police officer and a majority of the young men you put hand-cuffs on were African American, and you were put in the place of the officers who were involved in the Zimmerman case, wouldn’t you think the black kid was the trouble maker??? It’s simple Psychology. (I have BS in Psychology I think I have enough clout to say so) If you locked up people everyday, wouldn’t you eventually fall into the motions and “slack off”? I mean, I’m just sayin’.

Once again, by no means am I making excuses for the officials nor am I making any excuses for Zimmerman. I am simply pointing out a different perspective.
THINK black America. We DON’T know the facts and won’t know the real facts until litigation. Black people, don’t just hop on the bandwagon without thinking first.
To the friends and family of Travon, my heart really goes out to you. There’s nothing the public can do to bring Travon back, not even the charge of Zimmerman. I pray that the Lord comforts your heart and I pray that you find strength in Him during your time of bereavement.

Lessons Learned From My Kitty

“Reoooowww, reeoowwww!!” Oh, the sound of my kitty, affectionately known as “Baby Lion” in my house. I got her about 2 years ago. I was so unhappy with my life. I had no social life and no one to neither confide in nor listen to my issues. So I thought, “Hey, maybe I need a pet or something.”

Lucky for me my cousin was advertising some free kittens on her Facebook page. Totally excited, I immediately shot her a message. Within in the week a swung by her house only to find a whole litter to choose from every last one of the black and white (or all black—like their mommy)!

I distinctly remembered Baby Lion. She was the only one curled up, fast asleep. I chose her because I was actually scared that if I chose any of the awake ones they’d give me a fight and I’d get scratched! Believe it or not, I’m not an animal person at all!

Anyway, I’ve learned soo much from this little cat. One thing I’ve learned: My little cat DOES NOT GIVE UP. Let me tell you something, I’ve never seen such a persistent cat!

Like many home pets, my cat has been programed to shoot to the kitchen at the least little sound heard in hopes to snack a treat. Today was no different. As I sat down to eating my Fettuccine Chicken Alfredo from my local mom and pop shop, here comes Baby Lion, looking at me with her rounded eyes and widen-to-capacity pupils, “Meeeoooo!” It was as if she was saying, “Can I have some too?”. It is the cutest thing in the world to see here. <3

I knew full well that the little cat was not hungry. She was fed prior to me sitting for my feast. What’s was so interesting about this cat is that she did not move until and she got a bite. Today, she sat there until my very bit. Honestly I was too full to finish! Delish it was, btw. Anyway, to reward her for her patience and persistence, a gave her a little piece of my leftover chicken.

And so is the story of my cat. Any time any one of us (family) would sit to eat, Baby Lion comes running, hungry or not hungry…just to get a treat. It’s not all the time she gets something though. In fact, most of the time she doesn't get a morsel, but you can always bank on the fact that she’ll be there waiting!

So what does this teach me? Simple, to never give up. Even when things don’t work out as planned, I still need to be consistent and persistent in my strive, whatever it maybe, just like my Baby Lion does for chicken.

Now, I know what you’re thinking, “That cat just wants to use you for food! She doesn’t know what she’s doing!” Although you might be right, but maybe, just maybe we can learn that if we set aside (just for a moment) all our refined and controlled behavior and go back to our basic need as a human being: physiological needs (food, sex, breathing etc.) and tap into your “Id” if you will (See more here and here) we will be more satisfied with our lives. This is the same basic drive my cat runs off of and you know what, she does whatever it takes to get what she wants. If we do *whatever* it takes to get what we want with no regard to failure, be it personal, professional, or social we’ll get somewhere. J

I leave you with this quote:

“You'll always miss 100% of the shots you don't take”

Do what you gotta do to get where you need to get without regard to failure. Just remember that you have to at least make an attempt at the task and don’t forget to be persistent.

Thanks for checking in guys! Take care. <3

The Blood of Christ

He did not enter by means of blood of goats and claves; but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption. The blood of goats and bulls and the ahes of a heifer sprinkled on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctify them so that they are outwardly clean. How much, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God! For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance--now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant. --Hebrews <3

HOW MUCH MORE THAN,the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God.Thank You Jesus. Amen.

Inspiration...

Here are some some inspirational posts I've posted on my personal Facebook page. These posts help me just as much as the next one. <3

I know what I want in this life the Lord has blessed me with...when I see it and feel it, I know it, within the deepest recesses of my heart. If He Wills that I live to see the day, I WILL get my heart's desire and nothing shy of it... Bank on that! Adversaries get out my way! Dream big and make proper decisions to make it happen.

Moving back to south Florida has been such a humbling experience for me. I have met some amazing people, both young and old, each having an interesting story. Thus far I've learned that everyone's journey is different; therefore, you should accept, enjoy your own, and stop worrying, your time will come. Even if you're not in the position you'd like to be you still have so much to be thankful for and so much you've learned from your past. Enjoy the ride and encourage the next person :)

Random Note

It's been a minute since I've updated this thing.
I just want to say that God is awesome. Truly he has called me to be a light to this world. I've realized I am NOTHING without Him. As usual so many things goin' on in my life, lol. Most of it I'm too embarrassed to share. Not only that, I've let it go; it's in the sea of forgetfulness.

Finally Moving On..

It has been 2 years, 5 mnths, 1 wk, and 2 days since I've been back home in Miami. Ever since, I have been extremely unhappy. Going to church wasn't doing anything for me; praying wasn't working for me; going out wasn't working for me...Until now...

I can honestly say that this is the happiest I've been in so long. The ironic part is that nothing about my situation has changed. I still live at home with my mom and dad, I still am next to jobless. I mean I've "found love", but I do not thing that has contributed to my sudden realization.

I had a conversation with one of my best friends and I was telling her that I have given up on trying to be perfect and trying to please my parents. I feel like I have messed up so many times that at this stage there is no point in trying; as long as I can live with myself, and my situation I'm okay.

As far as my spirituality, I will not lie to you, I am not exactly where I should be. One thing though, I've learned to set aside all the legalities. I said to another one of good friends, "You come to Jesus knowing that you are broking and that you are going to fall over and over and over again....not for him to give you a one time happy fix"

All my life I have lived by the rules. As I grow older and wiser, I see that rules were meant to be bent and sometimes even broken. As for my salvation, I still believe that Jesus is Lord, but living by the "don't do this and don't do that" rules are out the window for me. It simply doesn't make sense anymore. When I look at the rest of the world I see some amazing people who are doing some wonderful Christlike things, but do not believe in Jesus; it baffles my mind. Then I look at the person who religiously makes it to church every Sunday but has a heart of dirt and grime....they do nothing for their fellow humans, they're greedy, selfish, and judgemental. I found that, that's what I was turning into. I was this super holy girl, who never went out of line, going by the do this, don't do that; I couldn't keep up. To make matters worse, my heart was full of jealousy, hate, dirt, and grime and on top of that the way I treated people was fake and simply unacceptable.

I've decided if I am going to represent Christ let me show the world that it's not about the do's and the don'ts, but rather the brokenness of humanity. In my opinion that's how it should be. Us "Christians" parade around with our bibles condemning the drunks and fornicators, while our hearts are just gross. We are just as broken as the one who does not know Jesus.

I say all this to say that I have moved on...finally. I am ready for the next chapter of my life. Thank God the drama is over. I am refocused and excited. I will no longer walk in the stuffiness of the modern day "Christian Way", but rather in the fullness of my brokenness. I'm broken and I openly admit that I need Jesus, there's no number of rules I can follow that will change my condition...

Love and reflect...

Talk with mom..a piece

I recently had a conversation with my mother. As usual she had her random pieces of gossip to share with me, in confidence of course, lol. It was about a young lady that we know who got married, had a child and bascially "let herself go". LoL. What I mean is that, before she was married, she was super hot. She dressed to impress all the time and was radient. Then she got married and had a kid. Now she's super cold, lol. I'm not saying this to put her down at all. I say this to draw reference to myself and how I myself have "let myself go". Not physically, but mentally and spiritually. SMH

Not my Momma's Religion. Or is it?

Currently Listening to: Jennifer Howland's "Righteous Revolution" A song about new life in Christ.

Not my momma's religion. Or is it?

Lately, I've been really questioning my salvation. Truly at this point it is suspect and could be categorized as borderline backsliding.. ::Question Mark Look:: Yea, I know. People who know me in real life may see me as the "All Mighty Holy One". Nothing could be further from the truth. Just because I know and quote scripture doesn't mean that I am exempt from moral deprivation. Like most people, stray and do wrong.

My Back Story

Like many children in the U.S. I was born into Christianity. I knew that Sunday was the day for church, and it was important for me to pray and read my bible. I knew if I had sex before I was married I was a social outlier and God help me if I got pregnant out of wedlock. I knew it wasn't ok to lie, cheat, or steal. Wearing tight fitted clothes was next to blasphemy. Using derogatory language on church grounds warranted a Scarlet Letter. And let's not forget the issue of secular music. If it ain't say, "Jesus", "Son of God" or "Hallelujah", you could pretty much forget about it.

I must admit though, I was trained well. When I went off to college I didn't take advantage my freedom and turn into a wild child. For all 3 1/2 years, I was pretty much straight necked. My behavior after graduation however, when everything in my life went wrong, could totally be called to questioning.

Current:

My behavior can still be called to questioning. I keep wondering why I fell so hard and never got back up. As I listened to the words of the song, "Righteous Revolution" a paradigm began to draw in my thoughts: Before you find Christ: You were morally lost and thus broke all the rules. After you found Christ: You're holy, set a part and no longer participate in the immoral behaviors of the rest of the world. Although for all my life I considered myself "morally found", I can't say that my life mirrored the aforementioned paradigm. Simple. There was no particular line of demarcation that indicated the exact moment I found Christ. Why? Because I was raised in the Christian culture, it's all I knew. It wasn't like I was some outsider, that didn't know better. No, I was an inny, and I was in deep. It was in fact, my Momma's Religion.

Really, I thought I had this whole Christian thing figured out. I mean, it was my Momma's religion which I did make my own. I knew the Word, I could quote it and defend it. I understood that we are saved my Grace alone and not by any good deeds. I've been there. I felt the presence of the Lord. God has spoken to me and through me. I've danced like David, naked. I've understood that God placed me here for..Such a time as this..... Then why can't I get back up? Perhaps my life is a reflection of the great King Solomon, harvesting all the wisdom but still broken. Or maybe Moses, stubborn, and not eloquent in speech reluctant to be the light for the lost ones. Maybe I'm still stuck under the umbrella of Momma's Religion.

Easter is coming up. To be honest with you, I'm I don't want to go to church. For some reason, at this point, I feel inadequate and fake. I am a poor representation of Christ. Going to church will just make those feelings even more apparent. Perhaps I should go and re-read those bible stories I was once familiar with, take a page from each character's life story and be encouraged. Lord knows I'm tired of this cycle. I just wanna be ok. But I have full confidence that My God can cure the AIDS of the spirit and any ailment of the spirit. C'mon Jesus, I need your antibiotics! I need that Righteous Revolution! Speaking Redemption over my life. #Redeemed

"RIGHTEOUS REVOLUTION (Feat. Monty G and Solomon Jabby)" Lyrics:

Written by Mark Mohr, Solomon Jabby, Jennifer Howland and Monty G. Music by Solomon Jabby and Mark Mohr

What the youth wants is a righteous revolution, ey yeah
What the youth wants is a righteous solution

Righteous revolution, righteous revolution

Listen sister say you must understand
You don’t know me so you can't comprehend
That what I am it is not who I used to be, ooh yeah!
And listen Mister say you don't understand
That this is not a game and me nah play pretend
And what I am it is not who I used to be, yeah!

CHORUS:
Righteous revolution
Let me hear my brothers and my sisters say
Righteous revolution

Let me introduce myself
So the world knows
I'm not playing games with my soul
Introduce myself
I ain't swaying back and forth
I ain't gonna compromise no more

What the youth wants is a righteous revolution, ey yeah
What the youth want is a righteous solution

See it ya? Me nah there asleep no longer
True we go serve the Father
From me realize say
Christ Him ah the Living Water
True we bigger and we broader
Righteousness ah di order

From we turn from sin and we nah go back
True we did dangerous like a heart attack
True Christ Him change we and we proud of that
Forward we a trod and we nah dress back

(CHORUS)
Let me introduce myself
So the world knows
I'm not playing games with my soul
Introduce myself

I ain't gonna compromise no more
Introduce Myself
Hey, and now you know just where I’m coming from
Introduce Myself
I've been changed and now I am a new creation

We want the whole world to see it ya
True me is a new creature
We did wrap up in a sin like
Meat up in a pita
Salvation could not sweeter
Now we a read Peter
And we start fi preach so a now them call me preacher
You can hear the Word of God
We make it flow right through the speaker
The humble to the meek ya
Stronger to the weak ya
We come fi make them know say
I you want love come see it ya
Live for Jesus and stop die up in a the streets ya

(CHORUS)

I'm not playing, I've been changed
Ever since I called on Jesus name
Like a butterfly wrapped up inside
I spread my wings now I can fly!
And we make the whole world see it there
Fly!
What the youth wants is a righteous revolution
Bang ditty deng bong bitty deng
What the youth wants is a righteous solution
